The Canning Town Local Service Centre will be closed from 1 October, 2011.

Changes to Canning Town Library and Local Service Centre

The council is transforming the way we deliver our services to ensure we provide the best quality and value for money for our residents. We will be offering better access to services by giving you new ways to do business with the council, allowing us to make savings by operating from fewer buildings.

As part of these changes many of the services provided at Canning Town Local Service Centre (LSC) will be moving to Canning Town Library early this autumn. This forms part of our commitment to providing better facilities for you.

Canning Town Library has been refurbished to provide many council services through enhanced self-service points where customers will be able to deal with a wide range of straight forward council transactions quickly and easily. Find out more about the changes here.

Canning Town Local Service Centre will no longer be available from 1 October onwards.

Although straightforward council transactions can be accessed through the service points in place at the newly refurbished library the council's remaining Local Service Centres will continue to deal with council enquiries that traditionally take longer or may be more complex.

One facility that will no longer be available will be the council's cash office in Canning Town. Paying your council bills at a cash office costs the council more to process than any other method of payment. Each payment taken over the counter at a cash office costs approximately £1.80. This compares to 2p for a direct debit payment. The changes mean we will be able to deliver a far more efficient and value for money service while offering new and better ways for customers to do business with the council.

The council is working with residents who use a council cash office to make payments - offering guidance and support within our local service centres on alternative payment methods.

There are now many other ways to pay your rent, Council Tax and other charges, including by Direct Debit, standing order, online and by telephone. To find out about alternative payment methods visit www.newham.gov.uk/cashless or pick up a leaflet in your LSC.

Guidance will also be available through money management advice sessions to help you access these other payment methods. You can still pay your rent and Council Tax using Allpay cards in the nearby Post Office, as well as at many other shops in the area.
