Family History and
Genealogy
Newham Register Office holds all
the registers for births, deaths, marriages and civil partnerships
from 1837 to the present for all events within the present Borough
of Newham.
We have all the records for the Newham district. We also
have all of the records of the old East Ham Registration District,
and part of the old West Ham District.
Births and deaths
We have births and deaths for West Ham for Plaistow, Stratford,
Forest Gate, Canning Town and Silvertown - but we don't have
records for the parts of West Ham that are now in Waltham Forest or
Redbridge.
Marriage records
We have marriage records for all Churches and other religious
buildings within the current Newham boundaries, and the marriages
attended by the registrars for the old West Ham and East Ham
Districts.
West Ham
If you find a GRO/ National Index reference that refers to West Ham
- we may not hold the records.
Issuing certificates
We can only issue certificates - you cannot search the registers
yourself.
We do not have the staff to undertake protracted searches. Searches
in the birth or death index covering a period not exceeding five
years will be made only where accurate registration details have
been given, and we are unlikely to be prepared to search for
periods between 1891 and 1965.
Marriage searches are typically more complicated as separate
registers are held for individual churches, of which there are many
in Newham.
We will need to be provided with both the date and place of the
marriage in order to do a search. Identifying the district will not
be sufficient.
General search
Although you can request to do a general search of the indexes (for
which a fee is charged) yourself - we are not always able to allow
this - because it requires a member of staff to assist you through
the complexities of the indexes.
