break

There is a statutory duty for Cemeteries to keep records of all persons buried therein.

At West Ham Cemetery, several types of records are held:

Alpha Books. An alphabetical record of the surnames and then first names of all those buried in date order of interment
Private Grave Registers. Details of Reservees and the persons interred in each grave
Burial Registers. A chronological record of interments
War Grave Records. An alphabetical record of serving personnel who died during both World Wars. May also contain service details.

Newham Council's burial records are now available on a specialist family history website

Newham has placed its records of 180,000 burials over its 150 year plus history on www.deceasedonline.com, the UK's only central website for these statutory records. All of the burials at West Ham Cemetery since its opening were manually catalogued and these have now digitised and indexed for the Deceased Online website.

Burial records are important research resources for family history tracing and Deceased Online allows users, free of charge, to search the national database by name of deceased, date, and location. If relevant records are found, the online user has the option to purchase access to these to view, print and/or download the information.

Deceased Online already has records for some 50 councils from the north of Scotland to South Devon on its website representing nearly 500 cemeteries and crematoria. In London, the councils include Brent, Camden, Havering, Islington, Merton and Greenwich and others are due to be included in the near future.
