break

Since October 2005, Newham Register Office has been offering a Nationality Checking Service for British Citizenship applicants.

Service disruption during Games Time

Nationality checking appointments will continue with amended times to allow for possible travel disruption. The new schedule will be available soon.

How do I book an appointment with the Nationality Checking Service?

The Nationality Checking Service is based at the Newham Register Office and is offered by appointment only. Appointments are held Monday to Friday 9.30am -3.30pm. Call 020 8430 2000 (Ext. 71106) to book an appointment.

What do I need to do before the appointment?

You will need to have completed a Life in the UK test and obtained a British Citizenship application form from the Home Office. Visit our 'British Citizenship and Nationality' page to find out more about how to do this.

What documents do I need to bring along to the appointment?

  • A correctly and fully completed application form
  • All original documentation to support the application as specified on the application form and Notes for Guidance. Photocopied documentation is not permitted
  • The correct Home Office fee

Can someone bring in the form for me?

No, anyone applying for British citizenship through the Nationality checking Service has to apply in person.

What will happen during the appointment?
  • A registered Nationality Checking Service Officer will check each fully completed application form for completeness and accuracy
  • Original supporting documentation will be verified, certified and returned to you
  • The correct Home Office fee will be included in each application
  • The application form, certified copies of documents will be sent by special delivery to the Home Office

Advantages of using the service

Applications containing all necessary details can be dealt with by the Home Office more quickly than those that are incomplete and applicants using this service will be able to keep their passports rather than sending them to the Home Office.

How much does the service cost?

The fees for this service are as follows:

  • Single adult - £50
  • Children - £25 per child

How long does it take to obtain citizenship?

The Home Office may take up to four months to process your application, although it may be considerably less than this. It all depends upon your personal circumstances.
