Playing for Success

break

The Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) 'Playing for Success' initiative is aimed at establishing out of school Study Support Centres at football clubs and other sports' grounds.

These centres use the environment and medium of football, rugby and other sports as motivational tools, and focus on raising Literacy, Numeracy and ICT standards amongst KS2 and KS3 pupils.

Newham has two Playing for Success centres, one situated within the West Ham United football stadium at Upton Park and the other within the East London Gymnastics Centre at Beckton.

We have recently had a bid accepted by the DfES for the development of a third PfS centre to be based at the London Aquatic Centre, which is to be built in Stratford as part of the 2012 Olympic Games.

The Playing for Success (PfS) programme is run over ten weeks of two-hour sessions a week for Primary and Secondary students. It focuses on developing numeracy and literacy skills, but a large emphasis is placed on other key skills such as communication, teamwork and co-operation.

Both West Ham United Learning Zone and the East London Gym Interface are advised by the LA Advisory team as to which schools and students in Newham would benefit from receiving additional study support.

Year groups 6 and 7 are invited to attend and teachers are asked to recruit students who will get the most out of attending the programme.
