School meals
Milk
Milk can be provided for all under fives. Please speak to the
school about its policy.
Clothing
We regret that we cannot help with the cost of school clothing. The
school may be able to help you.
Free travel for children by bus
Since 1 September 2005, children up to the age of 16
can now travel for free on London buses.
Transport
Whether your child is entitled to a
free travel pass depends on how far you and your child live from
the school, not your income.
For primary schools, your child can get a pass if the
shortest walking distance from home to school is more than two
miles for children under eight or three miles for children over
eight.
For secondary school pupils, travel passes are available if:
- You live three miles or more from the school (based on the
shortest walking distance) and it is a linked secondary
school
- You live three miles or more from the school (based on the
shortest walking distance) and it is not a linked secondary school
(where there is not a place for your child at a suitable school
within the three mile limit)
- You live in North Woolwich or Silvertown: not all children will
receive an automatic bus pass to get to school if you live in North
Woolwich or Silvertown. See Choosing Newham (available from our
Education Department) for more information
- You are rehoused by your council. If your family has just
been moved to Newham because your council has temporarily rehoused
you here, you may not want your child to change schools. Your child
will get a travel pass if he or she is within daily travelling
distance of their existing school, and they are in their last two
years at school (years 10 and 11). This is also the case if we
place you in temporary bed and breakfast accommodation in London
under the 1996 Housing Act. As long as your children are in years
10 or 11 and have at least a 90 per cent attendance record, we will
offer them a bus pass to allow them to attend their Newham
school.
