Free school
meals
As part of the Mayor's Promise #3,
all children in Newham primary schools are currently entitled to
free school meals. However if you receive certain benefits
you could be eligible for additional funding for your
child's school.
Free school meals for secondary school
children
Secondary school aged children, whose
parents are in receipt of one of the following are eligible for
free school meals:
- Income Support
- Income-based Jobseekers Allowance
- an income-related employment and support allowance
- support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act
1999
- Child Tax Credit (provided they are not entitled to Working Tax
Credit) and have an annual income that does not exceed £16,190 as
assessed by Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs*
- the Guarantee element of State Pension Credit will be entitled
to receive free school meals.

Please note: where a parent is entitled to Working Tax Credit
during the four-week period immediately after their employment
ceases, or after they start to work less than 16 hours per week,
their children are entitled to free school lunches.
Children who receive a qualifying benefit in their own right are
also eligible to receive free school meals.
You should not apply if:
- You are a foster parent for a Social Services Department
- You are receiving Working Tax Credit
- Your child is over 16 years of age and attends a college of
further education
The government also gives an extra £488 per pupil to schools who
meet national criteria for entitlement to free school meals.
If you receive certain benefits, and have a child in primary or
secondary school, you need to apply now to ensure your child's
school receives this additional funding.
To guarantee your child's school will receive this extra money you
will need to apply by 14 December 2011 and have you claim
authorised. So don't delay apply today it is really quick and
easy.
