Home Reader Service

If you can't get to the library, let the library come to you!

This is a special home delivery service for residents of the borough who are unable or have difficulty visiting a static library due to age, illness or disability.

How does it work?
Once you have contacted us, a member of the library staff will speak with you about how our service can best benefit you, offering support items and finding out about your reading tastes. We will then organise a mutually agreeable time and date when we will visit, and deliver new items to you on a three weekly basis.

What can you borrow?
The service is provided absolutely free! And you can borrow up to 25 items

All library materials can be borrowed by home readers, including:
  • a wide range of books in standard and large print
  • books in many community languages
  • talking books on CD or cassette
  • videos and DVDs
  • music CDs
  • jigsaw puzzles
  • reminiscence materials
  • journals, magazines and community papers
  • reading aids such as magnifiers and book rests.

We also offer optional extra services such as a 'book buddys' who are always happy to chat about your favourite books, music and films and will always try to bring you the things you like best. We also offer a free fortnightly minibus service if you wish to visit one of our libraries to choose your own books or attend an event.

We will also try to provide you with any information you may need - about the council, the local area, welfare rights, transport, and what's on…you only have to ask.

What should you do if you would like to join the Home Readers Service?
If you think you may benefit from the Home Reader Service you can:

  • ask for more details at your local library
  • get a neighbour, friend or relative to ask at the library for you
  • ring up your local library or call the Outreach Team on 020 8586 6541.
