break

Take the opportunity to explore the wildlife in parks and open spaces.

Starling: One of the more common birds in Newham; often seen feeding in flocks in parks and playing fieldsYou can see a wide range of birds such as swifts, wren, starling and even a kingfisher. Why not take a walk at dusk in the summer months and you may see bats finding their way home.

Wildlife (also known as 'biodiversity') includes all living organisms such as insects, mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles, as well as trees, plants, fungi and bacteria.

Despite its urban character, approximately 20% (754ha) of Newham is green space; including habitats which support a large variety of wildlife.

Draft Newham Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP)

A draft Newham Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) has been produced for Council. The Newham BAP will be managed by Newham's Parks Service and will form part of the 'evidence base' for the LDF; as such, we encourage your comments to inform the final draft. Consultation commences 23 December 2009 and concludes 2 February 2010.

The final Newham BAP and an accompanying evidence base study on biodiversity will be published in 2010. The consultation documents - including a non-technical summary and questionnaire - can be viewed on the Newham Draft Biodiversity Action Plan consultation page.
