Boxing in Newham

break

The club structure in Newham remains as strong as always with four amateur boxing clubs all affiliated and governed by the Amateur Boxing Association of England (ABAE), the sports' National Governing Body.

The ABA also represents England as a member of the Amateur International Boxing Association (AIBA) and the European Boxing Council (EBC).

London's East End is steeped in boxing tradition and success, and Newham is a major part of this, producing numerous champions throughout the years and providing a healthy disciplined activity for the young people of the area. Boxing in general is renowned as one of the toughest sports around and requires high levels of fitness, speed, strength and agility along with self belief and mental fortitude.

At the end of 2006, London's first Boxing development Officer (BDO) was appointed in a partnership between Newham Council and ABAE. The object being to support the clubs in the borough, the local ABA governance, and increase participation through grass roots development.
