Neighbourhood Sports Programme

We provide a variety of free sports activities throughout the year for young people in Newham, aged eight to 19 years old. Sports sessions include coaching, tournaments and leagues in a range of sports. All sessions are delivered by Nation Governing Body (NGB) qualified coaches and open to people of all abilities.

A range of different sports are available in your local area free of charge. The sports activities on offer are:

Basketball

These sessions will provide opportunities to participate in a coaching session, as well as, leagues and competitions; Professional coaching can help you to develop skills such as shooting, passing, dribbling, defending and attacking.

Coaching is provided by NGB qualified coach and Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checked.

Most events are held on a hard court surface, so please wear suitable footwear, such as trainers. If it's cold and wet outside, wear suitable clothing, such as a jumper, rain jacket and jogging bottoms.

Our coaches are always looking for talented individuals with potential and demonstrate positive attitude. If coaches think you have what it takes to train at the next level, you'll be referred to a clubs or academy.


Cricket

Tapeball cricket is a fun, action packed version of the great game, combining enjoyment, fitness and competition. Above all, anyone can play and it's very easily accessible. A tapeball is a tennis ball wrapped in gaffer tape which gives the ball a greater weight and speed, therefore acting more like a conventional cricket ball but at the same time not being as difficult to play with.


Dodgeball

Dodgeball requires balance, hand eye-coordination and reflex skills, where players are trying to hit other players on the opposing team by throwing the balls, while avoiding being hit themselves.


Football

In these sessions you will have the opportunity to participate in leagues and competitions, as well as, participate in a coaching sessions to improve your techniques and skills.

Handball

Handball is a combination of Basketball, Football and Netball with the object of the game is to simply score more goals than the other team, by throwing the ball into the goal. The ball is usually moved around the court by passing, however, the ball can be dribbled but like in basketball, but you cannot double-dribble. You can dribble for as or long as you want, but cannot hold the ball for more than three seconds without passing or dribbling.

Hockey

Hockey is a team sports in which a team of players attempts to score goals by hitting, pushing or flicking a ball into an opposing team's goal using hockey sticks.

Multi-sports

Multi-sports provides opportunities for young people to participate in a variety of different sports been delivered in the same venue. Multi-sports sessions include sports such as Athletics, Basketball, Cricket, Dogeball, Football, Handball, Rugby, Tennis and Ultimate Frisbee.

Rugby

Rugby is a team game played with an oval ball that may be kicked, carried, and passed from hand to hand. Try are scored by grounding the ball behind the opponents' goal line or by kicking it between the two posts and over the crossbar of the opponents' goal

Ultimate Frisbee

Ultimate Frisbee is an exciting, non-contact team sport. Ultimate is played between two teams of seven players or less on a large rectangular pitch. A line drawn across the pitch at either end creates two "end zones" (like in American Football). These are the goal-scoring areas. A goal is scored when a team completes a pass to a player standing (or more likely running) in the end zone they are attacking.

Volleyball

Volleyball is an Olympic sport, where inflated, spherical ball used to play the game. A game is played by two teams on a rectangular court, divided by a high net, in which both teams use up to three hits to get the ball over the net on the opposing team's side of the net.

What should I bring to a Neighbourhood Sports Programme session?

  • Suitable sports clothing and trainers
  • a non-fizzy drink for refreshment.

What not to bring

As we cannot be responsible for any items that are lost or stolen, please do not bring valuable items such as mobile phones or jewellery to the sessions.
