break

Athletics in the borough is growing strongly and the newly established, McCain's funded, Newham Athletics Network in one of the first ten pilots across the country and the only one in London which is Local Authority led.

Newham Athletics Network includes a cluster of clubs working strategically with other local key partners and funders to develop the sport of athletics.

The Network plays a pivotal role in coordinating and advocating all athletics related activity in the borough, it's seeks to:

  • Promote athletics as a sporting option to the wider community, growing participation through the less formal routes such as Street Sprints and athletics in its widest sense including triathlon routes.
  • Provide pathways into, and support for, the clubs.
  • Promote the coach education programme to increase and sustain the number of qualified coaches, officials and volunteers.

The Athletics Network investment is important locally to ensure that we can build upon the huge enthusiasm and excitement that the London 2012 Olympics will inevitably generate for athletics legacy.

A total of 5000 number of people are benefiting from the project plus a further 111 coaches. The Network portable 60 metre track has been used to provide over 10,000 young people a first taste of athletics. The Newham portable track is now available for hire - find out more here.

Such progress has been enabled by the support provided by Newham Council and Greenwich Leisure Limited, especially in terms of facilities, at the Terrence McMillan Stadium and the new indoor athletics facilities at the adjacent multi-sports centre.

A partnership between the Newham Athletics Network and Newham Council has also enabled a number of individuals to train for the UK Athletics Leadership in Running Fitness course. Find out about Newham's running groups here and how you can go about getting a place on the leadership course.
