Newham Swords Fencing Club

break

The Newham Swords Fencing Club is a club where fencers of all ages and abilities are welcome. Based in the host borough of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympics Games the club consists of two former Olympians, Linda Strachan and Pierre Harper.

The club are dedicated to bringing the Olympic sport of fencing to everyone. We run the club from several locations throughout the London Borough of Newham. We are open to all age groups and currently have senior, junior and cadet sessions running on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Newham swords also run Mini-Fence(c) lessons, aimed at 4-10 year olds, on Thursdays, from 6.15-7.15. If you would like to try fencing please contact us at fencing@newhamswords.co.uk or come to one of our sessions on Thursday or Friday.

We have people from all over the world fencing at Newham Swords, from Bulgaria to Vietnam and most points in between.

The Coaching Team

Linda Strachan is first of the three founder members of the club, taking the post of Chair. Linda is the performance manager and sets the coaching schedules. Linda fought for Great Britain at two Olympic Games, won a modern day record of seven British Championships and retired as Commonwealth Champion. A brief comeback saw her win a gold medal at the 2006 British Team Championships.

Pierre Harper is the second of the three founder members of the club, taking the post of Hon. Treasurer. Pierre is also the head coach and is responsible for delivering the coaching schedules and is the lead coach of Newham Swords' elite fencers. Pierre fought for Great Britain at three Olympic Games, was ranked as high as No. 3 in the world and won six British Championships along with quite a few more Commonwealth titles!

Dave Savin is the third founder member of the club, taking the role of Hon. Secretary. He helps Pierre deliver the coaching schedules and he is the coach most beginners will encounter first. Drawn back into fencing after a long break, there are, sadly, no tales of Olympic glory but if you want to learn the engarde position and how to parry and riposte he's your man.
