What is dual sensory impairment?

break

It is estimated that up to 250,000 people in the UK have a combined sight and hearing loss.

For some people this can cause difficulty with communication, mobility and access to information.

Some people are born deaf and blind - others may have been born or grew up with either deafness or sight loss and have gone on to develop another sensory impairment. The majority of people who develop dual sensory loss, do so through the ageing process.

It's a myth that you have to be totally deaf and blind to be deafblind, or dual sensory impaired. Most people affected by the condition, retain some degree of sight or hearing.
