Services and advice for council tenants

break

We offer services to customers who are not homeless but live in council, housing association or private sector accommodation who are on the Housing Waiting List. We can help you swap your home, move into sheltered or supported housing if you are elderly, move you into a home suitable for your needs or options in the priivate sector.

Mutual Exchange
If you are a Council or housing association tenant, you can decide to swap your home with another tenant. This is called a 'mutual exchange'.

Older people
There are housing schemes for older customers managed by the Council or Housing Associations.

I am a council tenant in a home with too many bedrooms
The Council runs an underoccupation scheme which enable council tenants to choose the type of property they want to live in and the area, street, or even the property they would like as long as it has at least one bedroom fewer than their current home.

I am an overcrowded council tenant
As with many other boroughs, Newham has a shortage of family size homes which can not meet the ever increasing demand for them. Most households will be waiting many years before they can bid successfully for a larger property with average waiting times ranging from 7 - 14 years, depending on the size of the property.

I want to buy my council property (Right to Buy)
You may be eligible to exercise to right to buy your property. This opens in the Newham Homes website.
