Mortgage
arrears
If you are in difficulties with
your mortgage repayments, it is important that you talk to your
mortgage lender and explain your circumstances immediately
otherwise you risk losing your home.
Your mortgage lender maybe prepared to enter into a
temporary arrangement with you to help you through this difficult
period.
If you lose your job - you should seek advice
from your social security office or Jobcentre as you may be
entitled to help with your housing costs. However, if you are
entitled to help with your housing costs you will not receive it
immediately.
If you have Mortgage Protection insurance - you should
contact your insurer immediately. Your insurer will expect you to
provide evidence that you are unable to work. You should check with
your insurer what evidence they require. You should keep any letter
you receive from the Benefits Agency or the Employment Service, as
your insurer may need to see them.
What can the Council do?
The Council can provide debt advice and mediation if you are in
danger of losing your home. Contact the
Housing Options Centre for an appointment with one of our
Housing Advisors.
If there is sufficient evidence to indicate that your mortgage
lender is going to repossess your home, the Council will also
advise you on the alternative options for rehousing available to
you.
