Homelessness
strategy
Newham's five year Homelessness
Strategy 2008-2013 was published in August 2008. The document can
be downloaded using the link at the foot of this
article.
We are required by the Homelessness Act to keep the
strategy under review, and to consult on and publish any
amendments.
The Homelessness Strategy Steering Group (HSSG) monitors and
reviews the strategy. HSSG meets on a quarterly basis and includes
partners from: Newham Housing and Public Protection, Newham Homes,
Supporting People, Children and Young Peoples Services, Adults
Services, Probation, Newham Drug Action Team, Culture and
Community, Crime and Antisocial Behaviour and Voluntary Sector
partners.
Our strategy will be informed from a year long comprehensive
review, involving:
- Reorganisation and rebranding of core homelessness
services
- Analysis of key performance information
- A survey of households in temporary accommodation
- Homelessness workshops
- Consultation with voluntary sector partners
Key statistics for the year 2007-08:
- There are some 28,500 households on the housing register as at
April 2008.
- There are around 6,000 households in temporary
accommodation
- There were 409 Homeless acceptances in 2007-08.
- Over 40 per cent of all homeless applications are from single
homeless households
