How do I find a place
to live?
Renting from a private landlord
can be the best option available for many people whether you are
single, married or have children.
Six to 12 month contracts between you and a private
landlord (also known as private tenancies, or tenancy agreements)
can be repeatedly renewed and can provide very stable accommodation
if both you and the landlord are happy with the arrangement.
What type of accommodation can I get from the private
renting sector?
- Shared flats or houses - You have your
own room, but share the kitchen, bathroom and/or living room with
other people, it's usually the cheapest option. The rent will
depend on the number of people living there (tenants). For example
a two bedroom flat will usually cost £200 per week shared by all
the tenants.
- Bedsits - Single rooms in large houses. The
average rent is £125 per week including bills.
- Lodgings - a room in someone's home. Prices
will vary depending on the area but expect to pay £65-110 per
week.
- Self-contained houses, flats or studios - You
will have your own kitchen and bathroom facilities. This
accommodation is the most expensive and the hardest to find on a
low income. In Newham a one bedroom flat is around £160 per
week.
