What are business
rates?
Business rates are pooled by
central government and redistributed to local authorities according
to the number of people living in the area.
The exception to this is in the City of London, where
special arrangements apply.
The money, together with revenue from council tax payers, revenue
support grant provided by the Government and certain other sums, is
used to pay for the services provided by your local authority and
other local authorities in your area.
Business Rate team
The Business Rate team is responsible for the billing,
administration, collection and enforcement of business rates. They
aim to maximise collection in order to ensure that the council is
able to meet its schedule of payments to the Government whilst also
providing a quality service to the business community.
To contact the team either call 020 8430 3250 or
email
business.rate@newham.gov.uk.
Business Rate supplements
The purpose of the business rate supplement is to
assist in the finance of the Greater London Authority's
contribution to the
Crossrail
project.
It is only applicable to properties with a rateable value of
£55,000 and above. The total maximum BRS which may be levied by a
levying authority is 2p per pound of rateable value.
