Canning Town and
Custom House regeneration
Newham Council is working in
partnership with the London Thames Gateway Development Corporation
(LTGDC) to create a sustainable community in Canning Town and
Custom House, where new and established residents and businesses
choose to live work and stay.
Community consultation plays a key role in much of the work.
The Canning Town and Custom House Regeneration Programme Residents'
Charter has been reviewed - find out more here.
The area will become a vibrant, successful and attractive place
with new leisure and retail facilities.
The Canning Town and Custom House Regeneration Programme includes
the building of up to 10,000 new homes, creation of thousands of
new jobs and two improved town centres. This £3.7 billion project
aims to transform the area physically, socially and
economically.
The area benefits from a superb location and excellent transport
links, including London Underground and Docklands Light
Railway.
Links across London will be further improved with a Crossrail
station at Custom House. There will also be improved links between
the bus and rail station and across the A13.
International links are good too, with London City Airport and the
new Stratford International Station close by.
The wholesale transformation of the area will include:
- new homes including family housing
- the replacement of poor quality housing
- homes for sale, shared ownership and rent at affordable
levels
- improvement and expansion of two town centres
- new or improved schools, health, leisure and other community
facilities
- the creation of more jobs with access and training for local
people
- work space for small local and emerging enterprises
- new shops, a supermarket and office space
- improved links and connections between the bus and rail station
and across the A13
- better quality streets and open spaces
- investment in infrastructure, services and
facilities.
Highways improvements at Canning Town
A major highways improvement scheme is underway at Canning Town. By
replacing the Canning Town roundabout with a junction and by
closing the two eastern slip roads on and off the A13, space will
be freed up under the A13 flyover to enable the town centre to
expand. The scheme will improve connections to Canning Town Station
as well as improving access for pedestrians and cyclists.
The scheme will also help to connect the Rathbone Market
development currently underway on Barking Road with the the future
town centre development opposite Canning Town Station. The scheme
also includes high quality works to the pavements and public realm
in the area. A new off-slip road for westbound traffic is being
created by connecting Rathbone Street to the A13 and this is
scheduled to open on Monday 6th February 2012. The new junction
layout shown below that will replace the roundabout is currently
being constructed.
