Involving the community

break

Involving the community is at the heart of the Canning Town and Custom House Regeneration Programme's work. Whether you have something to say about local services, want to find out more about the plans for the area or find out how the regeneration affects you there is a way you can get involved.

Canning Town and Custom House Regeneration Programme Residents' Charter

The Canning Town and Custom House Charter sets out the council's commitments to tenants, leaseholders and freeholders directly affected by the regeneration.

In November 2011 the Mayor of Newham approved an updated version of the Charter following a review. This latest version keeps all the commitments that are so important to residents such as the right to remain a council tenant, and the right to stay in, or return to the area.

The Charter has also been updated to reflect current circumstances and to clarify certain points where necessary. Residents were involved in the review of the Charter and all affected residents were consulted before the latest version was approved. Residents' comments have led to some important changes such as a new commitment to producing an Annual Report that will inform residents of progress and include details of proposed timescales. The latest Charter also contains a section detailing how individual residents and the wider community can be involved in the regeneration of the area.

Neighbourhood Meetings

Neighbourhood meetings allow you, the residents, to voice your concerns - to the council and police - about issues that affect your life. Whether its worries over anti-social behaviour, or simply the amount of litter in your area, we want to hear from you. The meetings offer residents a genuine way of influencing the way Newham Council and the Police work in your area.

There are four neighbourhoods:

  • Canning Town Centre
  • Fife Road
  • Freemasons Road
  • Keir Hardie Park

They meet every three months, with activities in between.

If you live in these areas or are a frequent visitor, you can attend.

Regeneration Projects

The regeneration of the area is broken down to individual redevelopment sites. We have consulted widely with the community to gather views and keep you informed of progress. In the last few years we have employed a range of ways to involve the community from roadshows to public exhibitions. Open to all, and widely publicised, these have enabled members of the community to: find out more about specific regeneration schemes; ask questions; give views and receive feedback. Community members have been consulted on the redevelopment of Rathbone Market, the Fife Road area, highways improvements and proposals to redevelop the town centre site opposite Canning Town Station.

For more information on these schemes, consultations that are coming up or how you can get involved please contact Keith Smith via email: keith.smith@newham.gov.uk or by calling 020 3373 4662.

Residents affected by the regeneration

Tenants, leaseholders and freeholders living in one of the regeneration sites will ultimately be rehoused as the regeneration progresses throughout the area. To find out if your home is directly affected by the regeneration programme, or to discuss how it will affect you contact James, Scott or Yvonne on 020 3371 1443 or email james.harry@newham.gov.uk.

Local businesses

All our public consultations are open to local businesses who are an important part of the local community. If you would like to find out more about the regeneration and how it affects your businesses please contact Keith Smith on 020 3373 4662 or email keith.smith@newham.gov.uk.

Community organisations

We have established a Community Network for organisations working with the community to share ideas, find out more about the regeneration and showcase their work. For more information about the network and how you can get involved please contact Keith Smith on 020 3373 4662 or email keith.smith@newham.gov.uk.

Masterplan consultation 2007

A consultation took place in 2007 to refresh the Masterplan, which gives the overall vision of how the area will look.
