Reconnect - transport
links
Newham is just 3 miles from the
City, a stone's throw from Canary Wharf and 20 minutes to the West
End by public transport.
London City airport in the south of the borough offers
an expanding range of flights to UK and European destinations.
Additional transport links will further improve accessibility both
within the area and to central London.

Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL) and Stratford International
Station
Eurostar trains are now travelling from Kings Cross St Pancras to
Paris and other European cities through Stratford international
station. There are to be domestic commuter services through Kent
from by 2010. When the
Stratford City development's first retail phase and the Olympic
Village is built by 2011, the station will be fully accessible to
Newham residents. For further information on this project, see the
London &
Continental Railways website.
Crossrail
This proposes a cross-London rail
link using new and existing lines that would half journey times
from Newham to west London. The proposed line divides into two
branches in East London, one linking into an existing route at
Stratford and servicing Stratford, Forest Gate and Manor Park
Stations. The second branch merges with the existing North London
line at Custom House, with a proposed tunnel link under the River
Thames connecting to Abbey Wood. It would be completed by 2017. For
further information see the
Crossrail
website.
Docklands Light Railway improvements
1. DLR Extension to City Airport and King George V Dock -
Opened in December 2005 this connects Canning Town to King George V
Dock, with new stations at West Silvertown, Pontoon Dock, City
Airport and King George V. The extension beneath the Thames to
Woolwich Arsenal opened in 2009. There may also be a future station
provided at Thames Wharf.
2. DLR Extension from Canning Town to Stratford -
Under construction and due to complete in 2011. The new DLR route
will take over part of the North London Line with seven stations,
four of which will be totally new at Star Lane, Abbey Road,
Stratford High Street and Stratford International. North of
Stratford High Street the line would be extended to near Stratford
International Station. The existing North London Line will continue
to operate between Richmond and Stratford.
See the web pages on
Dockland Light Railway development projects for
future updates.
Thames Gateway Bridge
This project is under
review and would link Newham to Greenwich. It would considerably
increase access to employment and housing on either side of the
river.
Silvertown Link
This proposed road link
between the Royal Docks and the Greenwich Peninsula aims to reduce
congestion at the Blackwall Tunnel. There are currently no specific
plans for funding the project or a timetable for delivery. Further
assessment and consultation will be undertaken by Transport for
London before decisions are made.
East London Transit
This proposals is for a guided
bus or trolley system running on specially constructed dedicated
trackways as well as on roads, where it would have traffic
priority. It would link the Royal Docks and Gallions Reach in
Newham with Barking, Ilford and Romford and could be integrated
with similar intermediate mode proposals south of the Thames using
the Thames Gateway Bridge. For further information see the
Transport for London website.
The road network
The Thames Gateway Bridge
and Silvertown Link proposals would be the largest road schemes
over the next 15 years. There is also a proposal for a Lower Lea
Valley Spine Road and new local road networks associated with
permitted major development schemes such as those at Stratford City
and Olympics, and Silvertown Quays.
Walking and cycling infrastructure
The following
designated footpath and cycleway routes have been identified for
