Regenerating North
Woolwich
November 2011
A regeneration project to ensure local people see real benefits in
one of Newham's most deprived, isolated but historically important
communities is well under way, with the two phases of improvements
to public spaces and parks now complete.
The new multi-use games area at Royal Victoria Gardens
is open to the public to play a range of sports including football,
hockey, a running track and handball.
It plays host to a variety of community events, including planned
footy fives tournaments. In addition to this, a new park entrance
and crossing over Albert Road have been completed.
Work has also been completed on the second phase, which aims to
revitalise the local centre at Pier Parade and Roebourne Way.
The council upgraded the public square so it can be used for more
community events, as well as making parking arrangements better for
both pedestrians and drivers and there is also new play equipment
for youngsters.
The plans were developed through a series of design workshops that
were open to the public in early 2012. Work will soon begin on the
park space between Albert Road and Roebourne Way. Proposed to be
renamed 'Kate's Place' after the mews which had been located on the
park, more detailed information on the timescales and the final
design proposals will be publicised soon.
All this is happening in the heart of the Royal Docks - an area
which will see dramatic changes over the coming decade, and where
many Olympic events will take place.
The regeneration of North Woolwich is a critical early-win in the
delivery of the wider Royal Docks Masterplan, which looks to
attract further investment to the area and demonstrate to local
people that they too stand to gain from the changes that lie
ahead.
