Regeneration
projects
As a core part of the Thames
Gateway, Europe's biggest regeneration project, there is more
happening here over the next few years than anywhere in
Europe.
A bright future for Newham
Newham is undergoing a radical transformation. Investments
totalling over £15bn will mean a growth in population equivalent to
the City of Cambridge (131,000 people) and some 62,000 new jobs
from sites like the Olympics and its legacy, Stratford City,
Canning Town and Custom House, the Royal Docks and Beckton.
Newham's huge potential for growth reflects its excellent location
within London. It has an abundance of land for development,
excellent transport links and a young, energetic and increasingly
skilled workforce.

What Newham has to offer
Ready for work
Newham has a youthful, energetic and
growing workforce. It has the youngest population in London, with
41 per cent under 25 years of age, and is one of the most
culturally diverse communities in the capital, with over 100
languages spoken.
A variety of training programmes are being set up to ensure that
the local workforce will meet the requirements of employers in the
area. Newham residents are already rising to the challenge,
demonstrating improved skills and educational attainment. See
Newham Workplace.
Great connections
Newham has exceptional
transport links to London, the rest of Britain and Europe. An
extensive programme of
transport development will further improve accessibility.
Regeneration Projects
The Thames Gateway
Newham's regeneration activity forms a central part of a much wider
project -
The Thames
Gateway. This is Europe's biggest regeneration project, which
extends from the Isle of Dogs in London to Southend in Essex and
the Isle of Sheppey in Kent. Public funding in this area is
expected to reach £9 billion between 2008-11.
Stratford City
Well into construction, this new £4bn investment will change the
face of Stratford town centre delivering a new metropolitan centre
for East London. A
masterplan study is also being commissioned to improve the
existing Stratford town centre and integrate it with Stratford City
to the north. For further information, see our section on
Stratford City.
London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games
The 2012 Games and infrastructure legacy will accelerate
regeneration plans for the Lower Lea Valley providing more homes,
jobs and sporting and cultural facilities. For further information,
see our
London
2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games pages.
Canning Town and Custom House
Canning Town is one of the most deprived areas in the UK, a
community beset by poor health, low education achievement and
poverty. The
Canning Town and Custom House Regeneration Project is part of
the Government's new Mixed Communities Initiatives, which aims to
create neighbourhoods with a balanced mix of privately owned and
social rented accommodation.
Royal Docks
A next phase of improvements are in the pipeline after the closure
of the docks. Significant investments have been made since 1981 and
Newham with its partners, the London Development Agency, plan to
further develop the area with more than 5,000 homes and new modern,
sustainable business premises to create jobs.
Find out more about the regeneration plans here.
Public Realm projects
There are currently emerging plans for two
significant and high profile public realm improvement schemes in
Newham at;
-
Stratford High Street - targeting streetscene improvements on
the western approach to Stratford town centre
-
North Woolwich and Silvertown - to improve public spaces,
upgrade facilities and unlock development opportunities in the
southern Royal Docks area.
