Stratford
Metropolitan
Stratford is experiencing
unprecedented change.
- Just across the rail lines from the existing town centre,
the first stage of the 1.25 million sq m
Stratford City development is due for completion in 2011 and
features a massive new shopping centre, hotels, offices and new
homes.
- A new pedestrian town centre link is being constructed to link
the new development with Meridian Square and the existing town
centre.
- The Olympic Park will provide a wonderful setting for the
2012 Games but will also
change Stratford forever through the
emerging
plans for a legacy of sports facilities, parklands and new
homes.
- High Speed 1, the extended DLR and its takeover of the
Silverlink line with new stations in the Lower Lea and later
CrossRail, will give excellent access to the rest of Newham,
Central London, UK and Europe.
The staggering scale of investment in the area provides an
opportunity for Stratford to become a major hub for East London.
The council is working to secure the benefits of this investment
for local people in terms of access to new shops, open spaces,
sports facilities, services, jobs and business opportunities.
The council wants to ensure that the existing town centre is not
left behind by the scale of development in Stratford City and the
Olympic Park and that it is properly linked to the new developments
to create a strong, integrated Stratford.
To help secure this future the council is leading on a
Stratford Metropolitan Masterplan which sets out a vision for
the future of Stratford over the next 20 years.
The Council is also working with partners to improve the
environment across Stratford by installing new paving, lighting and
benches. The
Stratford High Street public realm improvements cover the whole
length of the high street while the
Stratford Town Centre Public Realm Project focuses on Broadway,
Meridian Square and Theatre Square and includes a new landmark
sculpture opposite Stratford Station.
The Council is working closely with other stakeholders in the area,
including Westfield (developer of the first phase of
Stratford City), the Olympic Park
Legacy Company (responsible for the development of the Olympic
site after the 2012 Games) and the
Stratford Renaissance Partnership.
