Stratford High Street
public realm improvements
Stratford High St is currently
dominated by traffic, but there are plans for a large number of new
homes along the High Street.
The London Borough of Newham along with the London Thames
Gateway Development Corporation and Design For London are working
together on a project to improve Stratford High Street by renewing
pavements, road re-surfacing, providing new lights, signs and tree
planting.
What we are trying to achieve
- A modern, attractive, high quality street. This will make it
look and feel good to walk along and provide a better setting for
the proposed new homes
- Plant trees in groups along the road and introduce greenery, to
make the traffic seem less dominating
- Improve the quality of open spaces
- Ensure that any changes allow for more walking and cycle use
and provide a safer environment for all
- Reduce untidiness by the removal of unnecessary railings,
posts, bins and benches
- Make sure that all the changes to the street are low
maintenance, so that they stay looking good for longer
Budget
The improvements are being funded by London Thames Gateway
Development Corporation currently costed at over £9 million with
other funding sources being considered. It is part of a wider
programme of improvements from Tower Hamlets to Newham, see
www.highstreet2012.com
Programme
Works to the High Street are already well underway and should be
complete by March 2011.
Related improvements:
There are a number of areas close by that are also being improved
outside this project:
- Warton Rd at the junction with the High Street - to provide
better access to the new homes and the shopping centre at Stratford
City
- Greenway improvements being carried out by the Olympic Delivery
Authority
- Reuse of the old station building on corner of Stratford High
Street and Bridge Road: the public walkway through the building is
to be widened and improved, a new entrance to the DLR station is
proposed and there are plans to use the ground floor of the
building for new retail kiosks to provide activity in the day and
at night.
