Stratford Masterplanning

Stratford at Night

Stratford is experiencing unprecedented change.

  • Just across the rail lines from the existing town centre, the first stage of the 1.25 million sq m Stratford City development is due for completion in 2011 and features a massive new shopping centre, hotels, offices and new homes.
  • A new pedestrian town centre link is being constructed to link the new development with Meridian Square and the existing town centre.
  • The Olympic Park will provide a wonderful setting for the 2012 Games but will also change Stratford forever through its legacy of sports facilities, parklands and new homes.
  • High Speed 1, the extended DLR and its takeover of the Silverlink line with new stations in the Lower Lea and later CrossRail, will give excellent access to Central London, the rest of the UK and Europe.

The staggering scale of investment in the area provides an opportunity for Stratford to become a major hub for East London. The council is working to secure the benefits of this investment for local people in terms of access to new shops, open spaces, sports facilities, services, jobs and business opportunities.

The council wants to ensure that the existing town centre is not left behind by the scale of development in Stratford City and the Olympic Park and that it is properly linked to the new developments to create a strong, integrated Stratford. To help secure this future the council is leading on a Stratford Metropolitan Masterplan and a Stratford Town Centre Public Realm Project.

Stratford Metropolitan Masterplan

Up until the end of 2010 the Council will develop a masterplan covering Stratford Town and New Town Ward, including Stratford Town Centre and Stratford High Street. The plan will set out the council's vision for the future of Stratford over the next quarter of a century and how it will be delivered. It will include:

  • Proposals for the development of new homes, shops, leisure facilities, local services and business premises.
  • A transport study to develop proposals to create a much more pedestrian -friendly environment and improve connections between the town centre, Stratford City and the Olympic site.
  • A socio-economic strategy to ensure local people benefit from the opportunities being created.
  • A delivery strategy.

See the scoping reports for the Stratford Metropolitan Masterplan.

Have your say

The Council is consulting with the public on the Stratford Metropolitan Masterplan until 1 September 2010. The public consultation will explain and discuss the project principles that have guided the creation of the overall plan. These focus on the town centre, education, the workplace, families, housing, connecting people, sustainability, health and wellbeing, visitor experience and what can be done in the next few years to capitalise on the Olympic opportunities.

Why not fill in our questionnaire instead? This is now available for downloading here. Please note that the deadline for receipt of responses has been extended to the 1st September 2010.

The questionnaire that has now been made available on the website has some minor changes to the images and plans as compared to the original version.

However the content and ideas that we are consulting on remain the same and any previous responses remain valid and will be analysed along with any further responses that we receive. If you have any queries, please contact stratfordmasterplan@urbaninitiatives.co.uk'

Stratford Town Centre Public Realm Project

The council has commissioned a leading British architect and urban design team to design and deliver a high quality public realm with a unique visitor experience at the heart of Stratford Town Centre to be implemented over the next two years.

Improvements will include better pavements, street furniture, pedestrian signs, new or improved landmarks features and lighting of key buildings. The improvements will cover the whole of the town centre but focus in particular on Meridian Square, the Cultural Quarter around Salway Road and The Grove/ Broadway.

The designs are being developed with imput from local businesses, community leaders and user groups.
