There are loads of construction jobs coming to Newham, here are six of the careers available.

Logistics Logistics
Did you know who gets all the equipment, materials and goods on site. Every construction project requires a logistics manager and thousands will be needed for all the projects around the Royal Docks.

Did you know that over 53,000 homes are being built across Newham over the next 13 years? So, the demand for electricians is on the up.




Logistics

Did you know who gets all the equipment, materials and goods on site? Every construction project requires a logistics manager and thousands will be needed for all the projects around the Royal Docks.

Not only do logistics managers ensure that raw materials are transferred on time, but they check that goods are delivered to customers and business outlets. Organisational skills are therefore key.

You'll enjoy working with numbers too as it's the logistics manager who focuses on meeting targets and performance indicators.

In addition to those numeracy skills, throw IT and leadership ability into the pot. The job is certainly demanding, but highly rewarding too. Senior managers can earn up to £60,000 a year.

Most of the people starting out as a logistics manager have a BTEC higher national certificate or diploma (HNC/HND) or a degree. It is possible to start in a more junior role and work your way up with training and experience.

Plumber
Did you know that for the regeneration of Canning Town alone, we'll need thousands of plumbers to help install the central heating and drainage in over 7,000 new homes?

And then there's the repair work to existing buildings and homes when washing machines or pipes spring a leak.

There's loads of options in a plumber's work - you can choose to work alone, in a team or alongside carpenters, painters and electricians. Want a bit of variety in your life?

Good basic wages are on offer, alongside some companies offering incentives and bonuses. You could also joins the thousands of plumbers who run their own business.

It's helpful, but not totally necessary to have GCSE maths, English and technology. Most plumbers go for the City and Guilds Foundation Certificate which you can study for full or part time alongside gaining practical experience. Other courses lead towards NVQ/SVQ levels two and three.

General Construction Worker

We've recently recruited over 100 people to help underground the power lines in the Olympic Park. And that's just the beginning.

How would you like to do something different each week? It could be making roads, timbering or installing flooring in an office block. With such a wide range of skills you'll really be in demand.

So you'll also have a head for heights, be happy working outdoors and be flexible. Then of course there's the good wages and the chance to get overtime.

With no set qualifications, most people do apprenticeships so you can learn and earn.

Civil Engineer

And it's not just bridges - civil engineers turn complex designs for highways, waterways and transport into reality - on a daily basis.

Or you'll play a key part in designing buildings, pipelines, dams and railways plus have the chance to travel - for a salary of at least £32,000.

You'll need to be competent at maths and design and managing projects. Want to help the world run smoothly?

A degree, BTEC or HND in civil engineering is needed, followed by a period of training and professional development - so you'll be at least 25 when qualified, but it's worth the wait.

Project Manager

Project managers earn from £30,000 a year - we'll need hundreds in Newham over the next 20 years. Sounds like you?

You'll need a degree in building studies or building management - did you know that you could get sponsorship from a company that may even give you a job at the end of your training?
With a BTEC or NVQ/SVQ under your belt you could start out as a trainee technician and then go on to do a degree course.

Electrician
Did you know that over 53,000 homes are being built across Newham over the next 13 years? So, the demand for electricians is on the up.

Did you know that apprentices can earn from £10,000 and electricians with approved status earn from £23,000? You could be self-employed or work for a building firm, engineering company or electrical manufacturer.

It's not just the installation of lighting and sockets and repairing faults, but electricians also work on IT networks or security systems, depending on their speciality.

You'll need to be practical, methodical and physically fit with a good head for heights!
School leavers most commonly start on a government run apprenticeship where key skills and NVQ level three are gained. With experience and further training you can work up to managerial positions.
