6. Even before the London 2012 Olympics was secured, new regeneration projects for Newham were underway. These include a £4bn Bluewater size shopping complex in the heart of Stratford, as well as hotels, parks, health centres and community facilities.

7. Another regeneration scheme is Silvertown Quays, which will create a vibrant new heart for the Royal Docks in East London. The 59 acres of former docklands will be transformed into an exceptional blend of high-quality residential homes, offices, workplaces, retail outlets, and leisure and entertainment facilities to support a thriving waterfront community.

8. Also due for re-development is Canning Town and Custom House. This £1.4bn project aims to recreate neighbourhoods with a balanced mix of rented and owned properties and a first-class town centre as their core.

9. A government-rated three stars and "improving well" local council (the highest is four stars).

10. Living in a decent home in Newham is affordable with the lowest council tax in London and the average cost of owning a home at £223,000, compared with £419,000 across London.

11. 16,000 more people on low incomes will have access to affordable homes by 2012.

12. Over 75,000 local jobs will be created here over the next 25 years, benefiting the 68% of Newham residents who are currently under 40.

13. Newham's London City Airport offers routes to 25 European destinations, served by 15 airlines.

14. From 2010 the channel tunnel rail link will run from Stratford to Paris in 2 hours 20 minutes.

15. Stratford is less than 10 minutes by train from the City of London.

16. ExCeL Docklands is an exhibition centre which, since opening in 2000, has hosted over 1,700 events and welcomed over 4 million visitors from 193 different countries.

17. Green Street in the heart of Newham is the leading Asian shopping area in London.

18. Home of Thames Barrier Park. There are 24 other parks in Newham, three of which are current holders of the Green Flag award.

19. The Theatre Royal Stratford is the home of ground-breaking and innovative drama in London. They also do a great panto.
