Important tips for completing application forms

break

Most of our applications are completed online via the website.

You can of course send us a paper application, and these are available from the Recruitment Team, however we would prefer if you didn't. We receive over 15,000 applications every year, and our recruitment service is geared up to receiving online versions.

Remember that if you apply for future jobs with the Council, having the application online will save you loads of time and effort. You can amend your saved online application for different jobs, and you can be emailed when similar jobs come up in the future.

If you do not have access to a PC at home, go to a local library where you can access online computers for free. If you need help, staff at our local Workplace centres in Stratford and Canning Town can help. Also your local Job Centre Plus should be able to help out as well.

There are lots of things to consider when completing job application forms. Here are a few tips that will help to produce a good one.

Before you start:

  • Read all instructions carefully - if possible print off the application attached in the appendix to practice on first, and then fill in the online version- keep the draft copy for future reference.
  • Save your 'supporting statement' section separately as a Microsoft Word document. Its amazing how this can be improved and improved upon the more times you look at it.

Filling in the form:

When you fill in your application:

  • check spellings (if written in Microsoft Word, the spell checker comes in useful);
  • do not leave gaps;
  • use simple words and short sentences;
  • emphasise how you meet the requirements of the person specification in 'supporting statement' section;
  • remember, experience gained outside work can be relevant;
  • do not exaggerate or be negative - focus on positive information;
  • do not overcrowd the form if filling in by hand, if necessary include a separate piece of paper with extra information. However, if more than 2 or 3 pages you have probably written too much;
  • tailor the information you include to the person specification that is attached to the job description.

When you have finished:

  • get someone to check it for you
  • use a large envelope and a first class stamp
  • post or submit the form to reach us before the closing date. The earlier the better, so don't leave it to last minute!
