Political
Structure
The Council is made up of the
Mayor and 60 locally elected Councillors who make decisions on how
to provide local services on behalf of local people. There are
currently 54 Labour, 3 Christian Peoples Alliance, and 3 Respect
Councillors.
The
Mayor
In 2002, Sir Robin Wales became Newham's first directly elected
Mayor. With a clear mandate from the people of Newham, the Mayor
provides both the community and the Council with strong,
identifiable and visionary leadership. The Deputy Mayor is
Councillor Christine Bowden.
The Council also introduced with the Mayor a Cabinet style of
governance. These new governance arrangements separate the
different roles that Councillors have:
Young
Mayor
14-17 year olds who live, work or are educated in
the borough have recently elected Newham's new Young Mayor, Kaycee
de Belen. Shee succeeds Newham's second Young Mayor, Joshua
Adejokun.
