The Newham Executive Board (NEB) meets weekly, and key corporate
Heads of Service attend i.e Human Resources (HR), Communications,
Legal, and Corporate Strategy. NEB itself cannot make decisions;
these are taken either by the Mayor and Members or under delegated
powers by individual senior managers. However, NEBs role is to
ensure that the Council has strategic direction at an officer level
and that there is a corporate approach across the directorates. The
types of issues they consider include:
- Financial monitoring and performance management, in particular
tackling poor performance and preparing for inspections.
- Strategic and corporate priorities, for example overseeing the
Corporate Plan and the key resident priorities within the Plan, for
example improving street cleansing, reducing crime and anti-social
behaviour. NEB are also responsible for ensuring the effective and
efficient running of the Council, for example tackling sickness
absence, implementation of ICT and accommodation projects etc.
- Major projects and key mayoral priorities; NEB receives
progress reports on key activities, such as the preparations for
2012 and other major regeneration projects. They will also consider
draft reports for the Mayor and Members where there are strategic
implications.
