Where we are
located
Newham is in the heart of London's
historic Docklands. With fast rail links to the continent planned
for Stratford and London City Airport overlooking the docks, the
borough is set to become a hub of the international travel
network.
Historic features of the area include the Royal Docks,
built in the 1850s, which stretch from one side of Newham to the
other and enclose the country's largest area of dock water.
The Thames Barrier is also located within the borough, the largest
ever of its kind. Additional attractions include Abbey Mills
Pumping Station - an important example of Victorian industrial
architecture - as well as Beckton Dry Ski Slope, Newham City Farm
and the internationally acclaimed Theatre Royal Stratford
East.
The 2012
Olympic and Paralympic Games
The 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will have a
massive impact on Newham. The intangible benefits such as the
ambition and inspiration that the Games will foster, will be a
lasting legacy in Newham. Residents will be motivated to make
positive changes to their lives by using the Olympics to create
opportunities for themselves.
Many Newham projects support this including the sports engagement
programme and employment schemes such as Workplace. Both the
physical and economic landscape of the borough will also change
dramatically as employment and housing opportunities are created on
the Olympic Park post games.
We are already creating opportunities to improve lives through
Council-enabled initiatives in Stratford City, the Royal Docks and
Canning Town - all initiated long before we won the bid to host the
Games. The projects are set to make a big difference to the lives
of thousands of people in Newham for many generations to
come.
Stratford City
Stratford City is largest and most ambitious regeneration project
to date in Newham and the UK. The transformation will create homes
for approximately 11,000 people and jobs for over 30,000 people. 73
hectares of derelict land will be turned into a £4bn metropolitan
centre with more than 100 shops, three big department stores,
cafés, schools, hotels, parks and health centres and ultimately
bring the centre of London to the East End.
Royal Docks
Along the banks of the Thames, the Royal Dock's will also be
transformed. The redevelopment of the 24-hectare Silvertown Quays
on Victoria Dock will be one of the Thames Gateway's largest
ventures.
The waterfront residential, leisure and business facilities will
create more than 5,000 new homes and around 1,500 new jobs. Also in
the Royals exhibition space in ExCel will increase by 33%, new
homes built in the Albert Basin, new business space on the Royals
Business Park, new student accommodation for the University of East
London. City Airport, a key local employer and transport node is
also planning expansion.
Canning Town and Custom House
The Canning Town and Custom House Regeneration Project has been
included in the Government's new Mixed Communities
Initiatives.
The £2.5billion venture will see major improvements in this area
including the building of 8,000 new homes and creation of 500,000
square metres of floor space in a revitalised town centre. Canning
Town is in the top five per cent most deprived areas in the UK with
local people suffering from poor health, low education and poverty.
We want to use this project to tackle these issues, to create a
cohesive, multi-tenure mixed community, vibrant local economy and
improve the quality of life for existing and future
residents.
We want to create a borough that people want to live in and stay
living in and when it comes to regeneration Newham is aiming for
gold.
