break

On Wednesday 11 April children from Shaftesbury School Newham performed with children from Birkwood Primary Schoool and Grimethorpe Colliery Brass Band from Barnsley.

The Grimethorpe Colliery Band are a world famous colliery band based in Barnsley, West Yorkshire. The band formed in 1917, from the workers at the colliery. In 1992 the band members were made redundant in the programme of pit closures and they won the National Brass Band Championships in the same year. In 1995 their story was developed into the film Brassed Off, starring Pete Postlethwaite and Ewan McGregor

During the afternoon the brass band gave a brass master class to the Every Child a Musician (ECaM) students at Shaftesbury whilst the children from Birkwood had a visit to the Olympic Park.

At the end of the day there was a final performance by the brass band and the children from both schools. In the audience were the Mayor and parents.
