Award winner Jim Herbert got the shock of his life when top pop act Sugababes turned up at his school.
The trio were there to announce that he had been named the UK Teaching Awards, teaching assistant of the year.

Jim, who works at Little Ilford School, Browning Road, Manor Park, was described by judges as, 'Superman, Batman and Spider-Man all rolled into one. A truly remarkable, unbelievable and fantastic winner'.

Jim was one of the first people in the UK to receive a National Learning Mentor qualification and has helped countless young people overcome personal barriers and complete their school education.

Mayor of Newham Sir Robin Wales said: "We are honoured to have such a talented person teaching in one of our schools.

"His work is not only a good example to other professionals like him, but it helps to shape the future of our society by giving those children who are not so likely to do well, for one reason or another, a boost."

Jim, 50, was presented with his trophy at The Teaching Awards ceremony, at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, yesterday.

He said: "I was amazed, astounded and flabbergasted. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would receive such an accolade.

"I hope that it raises the profile of the school to the level it deserves. It's an incredible school for children and staff - a great team effort."
