Woodland Green Fun Day
a big success
More than 160 people of all ages
came to the Ashburton Woodland Green Fun Day on Saturday, despite
the unpredictable weather.
Visitors to the woodland on Freemasons Road
listened to a talk by wildlife experts, Kodi Pohatu and Zoe
Goss from Groundwork East London, about what is growing in the
woods, explored the woodland and helped to clear the area.
More than 50 children won prizes on the day, which were
various plants for their gardens.
Young children also enjoyed a bouncy castle and a face painter
at Rosetta Primary School on Sophia Road.
Extensive improvements have been made to Ashburton Woodland by
Newham Council's
Canning Town and Custom House Regeneration Project Team, in
partnership with the council's parks service, Pinnacle psg and
Groundwork East London.
Visitors to the event took the opportunity to make suggestions
and submit ideas about what they want to see in the woodland in the
future.
Councillor Conor McAuley, Newham's executive
adviser on regeneration and chair of the Canning Town and
Custom House Regeneration Project Board, said: "The
improvements to Ashburton Woodland has made an enormous
difference to the appearance of the area.
"Woodlands in urban areas are becoming increasingly rare yet are
an important legacy of Newham's past.
"I hope that people come to value areas such as Ashburton
Woodland."
Anyone who was unable to attend the event and would like to make
