Traders face hefty fine for selling
banned beauty products
September 24, 2007
Traders are being warned they could face a
fine of up to £5,000 if they sell cosmetics containing the banned
substance hydroquinone.
The warning comes after Newham Council's trading
standards officers caught two retailers in the borough selling the
unsafe products.
Officers seized the facial creams containing the banned substance,
which can cause cancer, liver damage and other illness, and are
investigating the matter further with a view to prosecute the
trader.
Hydroquinone is a bleaching agent which is often used in skin
lightening products. Since 2001, it has been illegal for the
substance to be available in cosmetic products that are sold over
the counter.
When buying skin creams, members of the public are advised that for
their safety they should check the label to ensure it does not
contain hydroquinone. If they see any trader selling unsafe
cosmetics or are unsure if the product they are using is safe, then
they can call
Consumer
Direct in confidence on 0845 040 506.
Councillor Andrew Baikie, executive member for public protection,
said: "It is outrageous that traders are selling these products,
even though it has been banned for six years. This is unscrupulous
and irresponsible behaviour. They are putting money before public
health.
"I would strongly urge the public to get in touch with Consumer
Direct if they have bought any products containing
hydroquinone." |
