Banned skin lightening soap seized

May 09, 2008

Residents are being advised to check the ingredients of skin lightening soap and other beauty products to ensure they do not contain harmful substances.

Newham Council's trading standards officers are issuing the warning after they seized soap containing mercury from a trader in East Ham, which may result in a prosecution.

The soaps are primarily used for lightening the skin. Mercury is banned from being used in cosmetics and skincare as it is found that prolonged use could lead to brain damage and kidney failure.

Anyone caught selling cosmetics containing mercury can face a fine of up to £5,000.

Executive member for public protection, Councillor Andrew Baikie said: "Traders should not be selling these products. There are good scientific reasons for why they are banned.

"We will not accept this irresponsible behaviour from these traders who are putting money before the health of the public.

"We will not hesitate to take action against any unscrupulous traders who flout the law."
