Beckton Community Forum puts safety first

July 10, 2008

People concerned about knife crime are encouraged to attend the Beckton Community Forum safety event on Saturday July 19.

The event called Making You and Your Community Safer - Action Against Knife Crime, will be held from 11am to 3pm at Kingsford Community School in Kingsford Way.

Community lead councillor for Beckton, Patrick Murphy, said: "This is an ideal opportunity for all residents to find out what's being done to combat knife crime on our local streets and to learn what they can do to help."

Newham Council, the Metropolitan Police and many other organisations are working together to make the community safer.

At the event people can find out about Operation Blunt 2, which is a police initiative to tackle serious youth violence, particularly carrying and using knives in public.

People will have the chance to visit a mobile police station and see the stop and search arches in action. They have already been used at various locations across the borough.

For young people there will be a workshop on challenging violent crime, while adults can attend a session on knife crime advice.

Also attending will be Beckton's Safer Neighbourhoods police team, Neighbourhood Watch organisers and there will be a martial arts demonstration by the Fight for Peace Academy. There will be information about support services available and tips on personal safety.

Beckton community forum is one of nine forums in Newham working to make each area a safer, healthier and more interesting place to live.
