Canning Town is the place to be

June 09, 2008

Mayor of Newham, Sir Robin Wales, was joined by Communities Minister Parmjit Dhanda to launch The Place in Canning Town.

The Place is a joint venture between Newham Council, London Thames Gateway Development Corporation (LTGDC), London Development Agency (LDA) and the Metropolitan Police.

The striking building opposite Canning Town Station is the second home of Workplace, Newham's successful job brokerage and employment training scheme. It also offers a base for residents to access information about the Canning Town and Custom House Regeneration Project and crime and anti-social behaviour.

The council's crime and anti-social behaviour team and the Metropolitan Police's Safer Neighbourhoods Team will also have a base at The Place.

Sir Robin said: "Local residents requested greater visibility and presence of services and The Place delivers just that. I am delighted that the council can offer residents the opportunity to come to one venue and get access to a range of services or simply get information about the developments in the area."

Executive member for regeneration, Councillor Conor McAuley, said: "The Place has brought the regeneration project team into the heart of Canning Town, making it easier for residents to access information about the exciting plans for the area.

"Furthermore, the launch of Workplace in Canning Town will enable local residents to access the wealth of employment opportunities coming to Newham as a result of our ambitious regeneration programmes."

Parmjit Dhanda MP said: "I'm delighted to open The Place, a centre that will prove to be an invaluable community resource in Canning Town and, importantly, one that provides access to the many opportunities in the area. We want to see real change in these parts of east London and are backing regeneration plans for the area with millions of pounds of Government investment."
