Councillors give a boost to new Upton Centre Youth Club

May 19, 2008

Newham councillors have boosted the Upton Centre Youth Club by supplying table tennis and badminton equipment as well as games consoles and games.

Plaistow North ward councillors, Joy Laguda, Zulfiquar Ali and Jonathan Knott and Deputy Mayor of Newham, Councillor Christine Bowden became aware that youth and after school clubs were calling out for resources through their visits to community centres. As a result, councillors decided to provide the clubs with the much needed equipment.

The influential councillor scheme, which allows elected members to focus on the needs of their local community, supplied the funds for the equipment.

Since it was launched in December the popular youth club has attracted up to 50 young people to each of its sessions, ranging from table tennis to playing sports like bowling on the games consoles.

As well as helping to provide equipment the councillors have also helped to employ youth workers to assist the busy sessions.

Deputy Mayor of Newham, Councillor Christine Bowden said: "Youth clubs and after school clubs are important social outlets for our young people and integral to their future. I'm delighted to be able to make a contribution to the improvement and growth of these clubs."

Aijaz Sheikh, youth club co-ordinator said: "The equipment has really helped to get the youth club off the ground and given the young people something to get stuck into. We really appreciate the support and commitment the councillors have given us".

Selwyn School and other after school clubs have also benefited from extra sports equipment.
