Forum football final is the ultimate score

June 09, 2008

Newham's talented footballers had a taste of stardom when they took to the pitch at West Ham United Football Club in Upton Park in the final of the inter-community forum challenge.

The event was the culmination of heats in each forum area where more than 3,000 young people and adults took part.

At the grand final, 432 competitors showed off their five-a-side fancy footwork before the encouraging cheers of more than 2,000 spectators.

Mayor of Newham, Sir Robin Wales, said: "The response to this competition has been phenomenal and I was impressed with the enthusiasm and skill level of players. For local people to play at West Ham United is something special and we're very grateful for their support."

Winners in the eight to 11 year-old mixed girls and boys were Real Ma Kidz from Green Street, with the 12 to 14 year-old boys category taken by TMT from Stratford and West Ham.

The 12 to 16 year-old girls category saw East Ham's Newham Raiders scoop first prize, while the 15 to 17 year-old boys was won by All Stars from Custom House and Canning Town.

Green Street's Newham Ladies were victorious in the women's category and Genesis from Custom House and Canning Town triumphed in the men's competition.

Laura Bryant, 29, played in the winning women's team and said: "It was amazing to play at West Ham because I'm a huge fan. To go in the changing room and run out of the tunnel was such a privilege. The whole tournament was a real buzz."

Competitors received prizes including trophies, medals, T-shirts, MP3 players and sports goods.
The Women's FA Cup and the FA Community Shield were on show at the event and proved popular for people to take photographs.

The final also featured health MOTs and rousing entertainment from the Ascension Eagles Cheerleaders, based in Custom House.

The football tournament was the sixth in a series of community forum sports challenges.

There are nine community forums in Newham working to make each local area a safer, healthier and more interesting place to live.
