Mayor hands out prizes at Dock Regatta

May 20, 2008

Mayor of Newham Sir Robin Wales handed out some of the prizes to competitors at the Poplar Regatta held in Silvertown's Royal Albert Dock.

The event attracted crews from all over the country and abroad, including some rowers who will be representing Great Britain at the Paralympic Games in Beijing.

There were more than 50 races over a 2,000 metre six-lane course at the London Regatta Centre. The competition was staged by the Poplar, Blackwall & District Rowing Club and sponsored by Silvertown's London City Airport.

The regatta included special races for schools to include children with learning disability. Other races saw able bodied athletes in the same teams as athletes with learning disabilities.

Said Sir Robin: "It was an exciting day and good to see so many high quality crews from all over the country and abroad competing in Newham. The Poplar & Blackwall club are very good hosts.

"We really want to push our docks as areas of opportunity for regeneration, sport, leisure and tourism. It was great to see people of different ages and abilities using rowing to improve their fitness levels, stamina, co-ordination and skills."
