Mayor opens new base for recycling firm

June 19, 2008

Mayor of Newham Sir Robin Wales officially opened the new site of a company that is leading the way in encouraging more residents and businesses to recycle.

Sir Robin was joined by Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London in launching the cutting edge Materials Recovery Facility owned by Bywaters in Twelvetrees Crescent, Stratford.

With an input capacity of up to 250,000 tonnes of dry recyclables per year, it is the largest under-cover dry recyclables MRF in London.

Sir Robin said: "As a borough, Newham is committed to minimising the impact on the environment and lowering the use of landfill. Bywaters being here will help the business community and residents do just that. It is a great privilege to open the new facility."

The company has had to move from their previous home as part of the development of the Olympic Park. The new centre is part of a £30 million relocation. It covers 187,000 square feet and is able to operate in all weather conditions, with materials remaining dry as well as secure. It can process all types of commercial and office dry recyclables, including paper, cans and plastic bottles.

Added the Mayor: "Beginning the construction of the Olympic Park and relocating of the businesses within it has been a key task. Moving premises is one of the most complicated and risky operations that any business faces.

"The prosperity of local firms and the jobs they provide is crucial to the prosperity of the borough. I am delighted Bywaters are staying within Newham. They have shown to be ahead of the field and it is a great privilege to open such a state-of-the-art facility."
