New City Primary gets into the swing of Walk to School Week

May 21, 2008

Pupils from New City Primary School, Plaistow took part in a jungle themed fancy dress walkathon to celebrate Walk to School Week and raise funds for new playground equipment.

The nationwide campaign encourages families to leave their cars at home and walk to school to save the environment.

Pupils were encouraged to dress up as jungle explorers or animals with participants rewarded with a lunchtime disco.

Mayor of Newham, Sir Robin Wales, joined in the fun alongside Plaistow South councillors Graham Lane and Maureen Jones.

Sir Robin praised the school for the innovative idea. He said: "New City Primary has a history of coming up with imaginative and interesting ways to raise the profile of important issues, such as walking to school.

"Because of the short distances covered and its stop start nature the school run is one of the most polluting journeys made. I'm impressed by the school's dedication to going green. The children have made a marvellous effort and are a shining example to the rest of the community."

Other Newham schools marked Walk to School Week with special events including a walkathon at Star Primary, Canning Town and a street theatre event at Hartley Primary, East Ham.
