Newham Council's street scene enforcement and trading
standards officers worked jointly with the Metropolitan Police and
the Environment Agency in visiting two dealers in Plaistow and
Manor Park.
A total of 15 tyres and waste transfer documentation were seized
from the premises with a view to prosecuting the traders, pending a
full investigation.
A fixed penalty notice of £100 was issued for vehicle repairs on
a road, an obstruction notice issued for the removal of tyres
stored on a pavement and the surrender of an object that would be
an offensive weapon if carried on a street.
Executive member for public protection, Councillor Andrew Baikie
said: "Thanks to all the partners who worked together in preventing
these unscrupulous traders from endangering the lives of the
public.
"It is essential to have good tyres to be able to drive safely.
Faulty tyres work less efficiently and don't last as long. They
could also mean a heavy fine and penalty points on your
licence.
"The cheapness of second hand tyres could far outweigh the
ultimate price. I would recommend that drivers use bona fide
dealers and if in doubt, contact Consumer Direct."
There are many dangers in buying part-worn or second hand tyres.
Their history is unknown and they may have been removed from a
vehicle involved in an accident or have been badly damaged. Repairs
may not have been carried out properly.
