Persistent noise offender gets his comeuppance

May 06, 2008

An East Ham man has had to pay a total of £615 and lose his stereo after he was found guilty of persistent noise nuisance.

Newham Council's noise team prosecuted Joel Campbell of Gooseley Lane after his neighbours complained that they were being subjected to his loud music.

After investigating the claims and witnessing the excessive noise, Campbell was warned several times and ultimately issued with a Noise Abatement Notice.

Campbell ignored the Notice and continued to play his loud music. The noise team then seized his stereo, which was filmed by a crew from BBC2 See Hear programme.

Stratford Magistrates' Court heard the case in his absence on April 18. Campbell was found guilty of two offences under Section 80 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

He was fined £150 for each of the offences plus £300 costs and £15 victim support surcharge. A deprivation order was granted, which means the council can destroy Campbell's sound equipment.

Executive member for crime and anti-social behaviour, Councillor June Leitch, said: "It is appalling that there are some people who have absolutely no consideration for their neighbours.

"Excessive and unwanted noise is not only a nuisance but it can also cause health problems.

"The council will prosecute any persistent perpetrators."

Anyone who experiences noisy neighbours can report it to the noise team on 020 8430 3810 (Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm) and 020 8472 9624 (evenings and weekends).
