The week aimed to promote practical solutions to everyday
noise problems, encourage consideration between neighbours, educate
people about noise reduction and encourage everyone to take a quiet
moment to consider the noise they make and the effect it has on
others.
The team also gave out leaflets and cards, as well as free
coasters, pens and fridge magnets.
Executive member for anti-social behaviour, Councillor June
Leitch, said: "Noise is a major concern for residents. We receive
around 500 complaints a month on problems such as noisy parties and
loud music, dogs barking, car and house alarms and noisy air
conditioning units.
"The effects can be debilitating through loss of sleep and
damage to hearing. Ultimately, noise nuisance affects people's
quality of life."
In a recent BBC2 See Hear that featured Newham's noise team, the
programme highlighted that more than 2,000 heart attacks a year may
be attributed to noise nuisance.
The council's noise team operates an around the clock service.
Currently 85 per cent of calls receive a response within 30 minutes
and 99.6 per cent receive a response within one hour - one of the
best services in London.
The team uses a range of enforcement measures, where
negotiations fail such as legal Notices, prosecution and seizure of
sound equipment. Recent legislation has also introduced the issuing
of fixed penalty notices for noise nuisance.
Anyone who experiences noisy neighbours can report it to the
noise team on 020 8430 3810 (Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm) and 020
8472 9624 (evenings and weekends). |
