Schoolchildren bike their way across the borough

June 24, 2008

Newham schoolchildren got into the spirit of Bike Week by taking part in a bike relay across the borough.

Pupils who have undertaken cycle training biked across the borough in a relay passing over a signed pledge outlining the schools' commitment to cycling to school.

Bike Week is a national promotional campaign which encourages people of all ages to cycle to gain health benefits, such as cardio-vascular fitness, as well as the psychological benefits, including improved concentration.

Executive member for public realm, Councillor Ian Corbett, joined pupils at Kaizen Primary School, Plaistow. The children showcased their cycling abilities and explained the level of training they have undertaken to ensure that they are safe on the road.

Councillor Corbett said: "Cycling is a fun, environmentally friendly alternative to the car for the school journey. Hundreds of Newham residents both children and adults have completed cycling training to ensure that they safe on the road."

Cycle training is delivered across the borough by Bikeworks. Adult cycle training is held at New City Primary School, Plaistow and will soon be available at Godwin Junior School, Forest Gate. Schools can book for sessions throughout the academic year.

Newham residents can book cycle training sessions by calling Bikeworks on 020 8980 7998.
