St Antony's School flies the eco flag for London

May 23, 2008

St Antony's School in Forest Gate is celebrating being the first school in London to be awarded permanent eco school status by environmental charity ENCAMS.

Mayor of Newham, Sir Robin Wales, and lead member for environment, Councillor Pat Sheekey, visited the school to help raise a permanent green flag. They enjoyed a green themed assembly in celebration of the achievement.

Permanent eco school status rewards excellence in environmental activity and was awarded after St Antony's successfully completed four assessments addressing a variety of environmental issues from recycling to Fair Trade.

Sir Robin said: "I am proud that a Newham school is the first in the whole of London to achieve this prestigious award. Children from the school's eco committee have taken their responsibilities very seriously and managed to maintain eco awareness both within the school and the wider community."

The eco school programme is an international award programme that aims to tackle sustainability issues and brings schools together to explore ways of working on environmental issues.
